What is the Overtime Calculator?
The Overtime Calculator computes your overtime pay rate, regular pay, overtime earnings, and total gross paycheck. In the United States under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time-and-a-half (1.5×) their regular rate of pay.
This tool lets you configure regular hours, overtime hours, and multiplier rates (1.5×, 2.0× double-time, or custom multipliers).
You can quickly verify your paycheck or project your earnings before taking on extra shifts.
How to Use This Calculator
- 1Enter your base hourly wage.
- 2Enter the number of regular hours worked (up to 40).
- 3Enter the number of overtime hours worked.
- 4Select your overtime multiplier (default is 1.5× time-and-a-half).
- 5Review the regular pay, overtime pay, and total gross paycheck.
Overtime Pay Formula
The overtime rate is calculated by multiplying the base hourly rate by the overtime multiplier (e.g. $20 × 1.5 = $30/hr). Overtime pay is added to regular pay to determine total gross wages.
Worked Example: 48 Hours Worked at $24.00 per Hour
A technician works 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours at $24.00/hour.
Given Inputs
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Regular Pay = 40 × $24.00 = $960.00.
- Overtime Hourly Rate = $24.00 × 1.5 = $36.00 / hr.
- Overtime Pay = 8 × $36.00 = $288.00.
- Total Gross Pay = $960.00 + $288.00 = $1,248.00.
Important Notes & Assumptions
- Default multiplier is 1.5×. Certain union agreements or state laws (e.g. California double-time rules) require 2.0× for specific overtime hours.
- This tool provides mathematical calculations and is not formal legal advice regarding exempt vs. non-exempt labor classification.
