What is the Decimal Hours Calculator?

The Decimal Hours Calculator provides instant two-way conversion between traditional clock time (hours and minutes) and decimal hours (hundredths of an hour). Modern payroll, invoicing, and timesheet software requires decimal hours to correctly calculate pay without rounding errors.

For example, if you work 7 hours and 45 minutes, entering '7.45' into payroll software would underpay you, because 45 minutes is actually 0.75 of an hour (7.75 decimal hours).

Includes a handy quick-reference conversion table for standard 5, 10, 15, and 30-minute increments.

How to Use This Calculator

Decimal Hours Conversion Formulas

Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes ÷ 60) | Minutes = Decimal Portion × 60

Dividing the minute count by 60 gives its exact fractional value. For the reverse conversion, multiplying the decimal fraction by 60 gives the exact minute count.

15 minutes: 0.25 hours
30 minutes: 0.50 hours
45 minutes: 0.75 hours
6 minutes: 0.10 hours (common 6-minute billing unit)

Worked Example: Converting 8 Hours and 24 Minutes

An employee needs to record an 8 hour 24 minute shift into their electronic time tracking software.

Given Inputs

Hours
8
Minutes
24

Step-by-Step Calculation

  • Divide minutes by 60: 24 ÷ 60 = 0.40.
  • Add hours: 8 + 0.40 = 8.40.
Final Result: 8.40 decimal hours.

Important Notes & Assumptions

  • Never enter minutes directly as decimals (e.g. 30 minutes is 0.50, not 0.30).
  • Common tenths-of-an-hour (6-minute) rounding rule: 1-2 min = .0, 3-8 min = .1, 9-14 min = .2, etc.
